CHAPTER 17

ADAM

Millie’s odd behavior appeared to have begun when she arrived from the general store, and hadn’t stopped since.

What was going on in her head? he wondered as he set the tables and placed out pitchers of drinks and ice. She’d barely looked at him, avoiding him at all cost for the rest of the afternoon.

Did someone say something to her? Something about him? Or, worse, something about Ellen?

He’d tried to keep her as far away as possible from the town gossip, but secrets had a way of getting out in that town.

Had someone told her about what he’d done? Was that why she was acting so odd around him?

The first of the dinner guests arrived, and she came out of the kitchen, ready to start spooning out the stew. His angel. The woman who would be his wife. He looked her over while she served the guests, throwing a hello to each of them and the regulars calling by name. He had to sit her down and talk with her. Perhaps, if he explained his past, she’d still give him a chance.

“Adam Jefferson, you’ve changed vocations I see.”

Adam turned to see Homer from the post office taking a seat at a back table. The same table that Adam had sat in the first time he met Millie.

“Homer. What are you doing here?”

Homer removed his hat and smoothed down his slick, dark hair. “Just taking in some dinner. Word of Millie’s stew has spread around town, and she’s invited me here to sample some.”

Adam about choked. Millie had invited Homer? Why? For what purpose? Why didn’t she say anything? Was that why she was acting so odd? Because she’d invited a man for dinner?

“When did you see Millie?” he asked. He’d escorted her that morning to drop off the pies at the post office and the sheriff’s office, so it couldn’t be then.

“At the general store this afternoon.”

The general store! She’d come back from the general store and had barely spoken to him since.

Was this man the reason why? The same man who wore spectacles and worked in the post office and has claimed to have read every book in the book store? Was that the type of man that she wanted? An educated gentleman like Homer?

Adam put down the cups he’d been holding and stormed back to where Millie was dishing out stew to a table of hungry men.

“We need to talk,” he said, low enough for her to hear.

She visibly stiffened, not looking at him. “About what?”

“About why you’ve invited Homer here for dinner.”

She dished out another bowl of soup before answering. “He looked hungry.”

“I’ll bet.”

“Adam, please.”

“Give him his dinner and tell him to be gone from here.”

“Why?”

“I don’t want him buzzing around you.”

She smirked. “Oh, Adam. You’re being ridiculous.”

“Yes, Adam.” One of the men laughed. “You’re being ridiculous.” The rest of the small table joined in, and Adam imagined introducing each one of them to his fist. He knew he could take them. He’d taken men much worse, after all.
